Anti-Muslim Group, Protesters Face Off Outside Hillsborough School District Offices

Friday, September 14th, 2012

A day of trying to keep a Muslim advocacy group out of Hillsborough County’s public schools didn’t go as planned.

After a prayer vigil Tuesday morning, opponents of radical Islam and about 30 supporters gathered for a news conference outside the school district’s downtown headquarters.

They were met by an equally sized and equally vocal group of demonstrators who objected to their message.

Carrying signs that said “Free Speech,” “No Hate Today” and “I love angry white people,” they shouted down the panel of speakers who had been invited by School Board candidate Terry Kemple, a conservative Christian leader in eastern Hillsborough.

“We are here because we don’t stand for religious intolerance,” said Charles Allen, 26, a University of South Florida graduate student who learned about the counter-protest on Facebook.

Estefania Galvis, a 21-year-old student from Colombia, said she is offended when immigrants are stereotyped.

And she objects to Kemple’s vilification of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a campaign that began after CAIR executive director Hassan Shibly visited Steinbrenner High School in Lutz last year.

Opponents of CAIR say the organization has terrorist ties. Local CAIR leaders say their mission is to promote tolerance and respect.

For a while, members of the opposing groups stood nose-to-nose, shouting each other down.

They included Richard Swier, a retired 23-year Army veteran involved in United West, an organization that seeks to defend Western civilization against what it calls the cultural onslaught of Islam.

Swier tried to convince the chanting protesters his group was not hateful. “We want to stop hate as well,” he said. “Hate is coming from those who want to kill us.”

Kelly Benjamin, 35, got into arguments with several anti-CAIR speakers, including radio host Roger Homefield.

“I am not hateful,” Homefield bellowed, pointing a finger at Benjamin’s chest. “My girlfriend is black. Am I a racist? … Who are you calling hateful?”

Benjamin countered: “You seem a little hateful right now, sir.”

Kemple, who spoke last, directed his comments to those gathered to oppose him.

“It’s always amazing to me that the people who talk about tolerance and freedom of speech are the most intolerant in keeping others from having their freedom of speech,” he said.

Thai police probe ‘trafficking’ of Cambodians

Monday, August 20th, 2012

Immigration police are looking into a possible human-trafficking scheme in which Cambodian Muslims legally enter Thailand through Sa Kaew as tourists for 14 days but work as rubber tappers in Narathiwat for up to six months.

When they want to go home, they let themselves be arrested for illegal entry by abandoning their travel documents. Then they are repatriated and later re-enter Thailand using the same names in new passports.

Pol Lt-Colonel Benjaphol Rodsawas, an immigration officer in Narathiwat, said this channel could also be used to help insurgents in the deep South flee Thailand or relocate. Besides being illegal, it serves as a measure for traffickers to relocate these people without them being prosecuted or imprisoned, he said.

The discovery followed recent arrests of 131 Cambodian Muslims in Narathiwat, who entered Thailand through Sa Kaew on a 14-day tourist visit. They travelled to Narathiwat and worked as rubber tappers.

Tensions Flare in France over Veil Ban

Friday, August 10th, 2012

Though it was almost midnight, streets were full of Muslim families taking a stroll after breaking the Ramadan fast with a late dinner. As two policemen drove by a storefront recycled as the Grand Sunna Mosque, they noticed a woman wearing flowing black robes and a full-face veil.

The policemen alighted from their patrol car and challenged the woman on her veil, which has been illegal in France since April 2011. After an angry exchange, police said later, the woman shouted that she would not abide by the anti-veil law, and a youth told police they had no business patrolling the neighborhood and accosting its predominantly Muslim residents.

The confrontation quickly escalated into a shoving match, with several dozen young bystanders joining in and carloads of police reinforcements speeding up to lend a hand. Before long it erupted into what was described in the National Assembly in Paris as a riot, during which a female police officer was bitten on the arm and two of her male colleagues were bashed and bruised.

The sudden clash, which took place July 24 in Marseille, was the most serious instance of resistance to the veil ban during its 16 months of enforcement, according to police. Although it subsided almost as quickly as it flared, the outburst focused national attention on simmering resentment over the ban among France’s most militant and tradition-minded Muslims.

“For young militants, this ban upsets them,” said Nassera Benmarnia, who heads the local Muslim Family Union. “But most people just want to be left alone.”

{snip}

France, which has Europe’s largest Muslim population, is the only country with a national ban against full-face veils, usually called a niqab.

Belgium’s lower house of Parliament has passed similar anti-veil legislation, and the government hopes to get the law validated soon in the Senate. The Dutch government has said it also would seek to impose a ban next year. Meanwhile, some Belgian cities, including Brussels, the capital, have already enacted bans at the municipal level.

The French Interior Ministry said in April, on the ban’s first anniversary, that 354 women had been challenged by police for wearing full-face veils and 299 were given citations similar to traffic tickets.

Estimating the number of Muslims among France’s 65 million inhabitants is difficult because it is illegal to demand people to cite their religion or ethnic background. But the Interior Ministry, along with academic researchers, has put the number at more than 5 million. Some Muslim activists say the number is closer to 6 million because illegal immigrants, many of them North African Muslims, live below the radar.

In Marseille, the Muslim population is estimated at up to 25 percent of the city’s 800,000 residents.

After the violence in the Third District, police took in the veiled woman and three young men. But an on-call magistrate, noting that this was the Ramadan period of Muslim fasting and that an angry crowd was milling about outside, ordered the four released, promising they would be called back next month to face possible charges.

Infuriating police, the magistrate also ordered an internal investigation of accusations leveled by the youths that the police were unnecessarily aggressive. The investigation prompted particular outrage because Marseille police have been struggling for months to quash a bloody turf war among drug gangs that led to the killing of a policeman last winter with an assault rifle.

The three young men, he said, acknowledged they resisted arrest and presented their apologies. But the woman, a 19-year-old convert of European origin identified as Louise-Marie Suisse, refused to apologize and maintained her resistance to the veil ban, he added.

Radical Muslims plan opening ceremony protest outside park

Sunday, July 29th, 2012

The group, led by some of Britain’s most prominent Islamist figures, said they would gather outside the gates to the park in Stratford before the opening ceremony to condemn Britain and other countries they accuse of persecuting Muslims.

They aim to attract the attention of 60,000 spectators due to attend the ceremony in the main Olympic stadium that officially opens the Games at 9 p.m.

The group has set up a website, evilolympics.com, which has the tagline “While the world plays, Muslims are being killed around the globe”.

“It will be one of the biggest demonstrations that the Muslim community has put on in the UK,” said organizer Mizanur Rahman said, estimating that “easily hundreds” would attend.

Rahman served a four-year jail term for encouraging followers to kill British and American troops in Afghanistan and Iraq during a protest in 2006.

Another organizer is Anjem Choudary, who has led numerous similar protests and threatened to disrupt last year’s royal wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton until police banned the planned demonstration.

East London, where the Olympic Park is located, is home to a large Muslim community housed in some of the capital’s poorest neighborhoods. It is also home to a number of British Muslims convicted of involvement in plots since the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.

Rahman said they had been given permission by police to stage Friday’s protest and added it would not be their last during the Games.

“Appropriate policing plans are in place,” a spokeswoman for the London force said.

Rahman said the decision of judo chiefs not to allow a Saudi athlete to compete wearing an Islamic headscarf showed why Muslims should boycott the Olympics, which this year coincides with the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

“I would hope that this would be a sign they should not be in the Games,” said Rahman.

“Muslim terrorists misunderstood” study says

Saturday, July 14th, 2012

A new taxpayer-funded study that was released this week claims that rather than wanting to force their religion on people, Muslim terrorists are simply understood and only kill people because they are victims of those who oppose Islam.

The 147 page study, titled “How Islamist Extremists quote the Qu’ran” states it analyzed the most frequently cited or quoted verses listed in the Center for Strategic Communication’s database of over 2,000 extremist texts from 1998 to 2011.

We conclude that verses extremists cite from the Qur’an do not suggest an offensive foe seeking domination and conquest of unbelievers, as is commonly assumed. Instead they deal with themes of victimization, dishonor, and retribution. …

Based on this analysis we recommend that the West abandon claims that Islamist extremists seek world domination, focus on counteracting or addressing claims of victimage, emphasize alternative means of deliverance, and work to undermine “champion” image sought by extremists.

The study, conducted by Arizona State University’s Center for Strategic Communication also appears to downplay Muslim extremists by substituting the word “God” for “Allah.”

The study mentions that Surah 9:5, often referred to as the Verse of the Sword is mentioned less often than other verses.

“Other findings in the report raise questions about the veracity of claims often made by analysts. The most surprising is the near absence of the well-known ‘Verse of the Sword’ (9:5) from the extremist texts.

The report cites Surah 9:14 quoting it as saying, “God Almighty said: ‘fight them and God will punish them by your hands, cover them with shame, help you (to victory) over them, heal the breasts of believers.”

However, the actual verse in the Qu’ran, printed by Ansariyan Publications in Iran states, “Fight them, Allah will punish them by your hands and bring them to disgrace, and assist you against them and heal the hearts of a believing people.”

The report says, “The verbs used in 9:14 indicate and assumption that Muslims have been wronged and wounded by the unbelievers. Thus, violent action is presented as retaliatory.”

“Extremists do not favor the ‘Verse of the Sword,’ which encourages all-out war against believers,” the report claims. “Instead they appear to invoke specific verses of the Qur’an that support a promise of deliverance.”

Deliverance stories are defined as a literary structure in which “the community, people or nation of the protagonist struggles in a precarious existence and must be delivered from those conditions.” It cites David and Goliath as an example of a deliverance story.

The report then goes on to make some interesting recommendations including abandoning claims that Islamists seek world domination and to focus on addressing claims of victimage.

Judicial Watch reports that the center received a $6.1 million grant from the Department of Defense for a neurophysiological study involving narrative comprehension and persuasion. The center’s biggest project, however, is a six-year, $4.5 million study on Islamist extremists’ use of narrative to influence contested populations in the Middle East, Southwest Asia, North Africa and Europe.

Muslim Persecution of Christians: May, 2012

Monday, July 2nd, 2012

Unlike those nations, such as Saudi Arabia, that have eliminated Christianity altogether, Muslim countries with significant Christian minorities saw much persecution during the month of May: in Egypt, Christians were openly discriminated against in law courts, even as some accused the nation’s new president of declaring that he will “achieve the Islamic conquest of Egypt for the second time, and make all Christians convert to Islam”; in Indonesia, Muslims threw bags of urine on Christians during worship; in Kashmir and Zanzibar, churches were set aflame; and in Mali Christianity “faces being eradicated.”

Elsewhere in sub-Saharan Africa—in Nigeria, Somalia, Kenya, Sudan, the Ivory Coast—wherever Islam and Christianity meet, Christians are being killed, slaughtered, beheaded and even crucified

Categorized by theme, May’s assemblage of Muslim persecution of Christians around the world includes (but is not limited to) the following accounts, listed in alphabetical order by country, not severity.  Note: Because Pakistan had the lion’s share of persecuted Christians last month, it has its own section below, covering the entire gamut of persecution—from apostasy and blasphemy to rape and forced conversions.

Church Attacks

Indonesia saw several church-related attacks:

  • A mob of 600 Muslims threw bags of urine, stones, and rotten eggs at the congregation of a Protestant church at the start of Ascension Day service, while shouting profanity and threatening to kill the pastor.  No arrests were made. The church had applied for a permit to construct its house of worship five years ago. Pressured by local Muslims, the local administration ordered the church to shut down in December 2009, though the Supreme Court recently overruled its decision, saying the church is eligible for a permit.  Regardless, local Muslims and officials demand that the church shut down.
  • Following protests “by hard-line groups including the Islamic Defenders Front,” nearly 20 Christian houses of worship were sealed off by authorities on the pretext of “not having permits.” Authorities added that only one church may be built in the district in question to accommodate the region’s 20,000 Christians.
  • The Muslim mayor who illegally sealed the beleaguered GKI Yasmin church, forcing congregants to worship in the streets, has agreed to reopen it—but only if a mosque is built next door, to ensure the church stay in line.  As well as opposition from the mayor, “the church has faced hostility from local Muslims, who have rallied against them, blocked them from accessing the street where the church is situated and disrupted their outdoor services. It is unlikely that they will suddenly embrace the Christians.”

France: Prior to celebrating mass, “four youths, aged 14 to 18, broke into the Church of St. Joseph, before launching handfuls of pebbles at 150 faithful present at the service.” They were chased out,  though “the parishioners, many of whom are elderly, were greatly shocked by the disrespectful act of the youths of North African origin.”

Kashmir: A Catholic church made entirely of wood was partially destroyed after unknown assailants set it on fire. “What happened is not an isolated case,” said the president of the Global Council of Indian Christians, and follows the “persecution” of a pastor who baptized Muslims. “With these gestures, the Muslim community is trying to intimidate the Christian minority.”

Kuwait: Two months after the Saudi Grand Mufti decreed, in response to a question on whether churches may exist in Kuwait, that all regional churches must be destroyed, villa-churches serving Western foreigners are being targeted.  One congregation was evicted without explanation “from a private villa used for worship gatherings for the past seven years”; another villa-church was ordered to “pay an exorbitant fine each month to use a facility it had been renting… Church leaders reportedly decided not to argue and moved out.”

Zanzibar: Hundreds of Muslims set two churches on fire and clashed with police during protests against the arrest of senior members of an Islamist movement known as the Association for Islamic Mobilization and Propagation.  Afterwards, the group issued a statement denying any involvement of wrong doing.

Pakistan: Apostasy, Blasphemy, Rape, Forced Conversions, and Oppression

  • A 20-year-old Christian man was arrested and charged with “blasphemy”—a crime “punishable with life imprisonment”—after vengeful Muslims accused him of burning a Koran soon after a billiard game.  The Muslims kept taunting and threatening him, to which the Christian “dared them to do whatever they wanted and walked away.”  Days later came the accusation and arrest, which caused Muslim riots, creating “panic among Christians” who “left their houses anticipating violence.”
  • Two years ago, after a Muslim man converted to Christianity and told his wife, she abused and exposed him, resulting in his getting severely beaten. “No one was willing to let me live the life I wanted [as a Christian]—they say Islam is not a religion of compulsion, but no one has been able to tell me why Muslims who don’t find satisfaction in the religion become liable to be killed.”  He eventually divorced, escaped, and remarried a Christian woman.  Now that his family have again discovered his whereabouts, they have resumed threatening him.  According to his wife:“Every other day, we receive threatening phone calls…They are now asking him to abandon us and renounce Christianity, threatening that they will kill me and our child.”
  • A new report indicates that “on average, eight to ten Christians are being forced every month by fanatic Muslims to convert to Islam, mostly in Sindh and Punjab provinces.  The victims of forced conversions are often girls from poor backgrounds who are then subjected to harrowing and extremely traumatic ordeals. Most of them are extremely vulnerable and are unable to defend themselves against extremists because their community is deprived, defenseless and marginalized. Christians, who constitute just about two percent of the Pakistani population, are paying a high price for being a part of the minority community.”  Two such cases from May follow:
  • In an attempt to force her to drop charges against them for raping her 13-year-old niece, a band of Muslims severely beat a pregnant Christian woman causing her to lose female twins to miscarriage.  The rapists came when all male members of the Christian household were out working and beat the women “mercilessly.” “They murdered our children, they raped our daughter.  We have nothing left with us,” lamented an older family member.  As usual, police ignored both cases—the raped Christian girl and her beaten family.
  • A 14-year-old Christian girl was abducted and forced to convert to Islam by her uncle who himself earlier converted. Pakistani police refuse to liberate her, saying she converted of her own free will.  According to her father: “After converting, my brother is conspiring against our family and kidnapped Mary with deception.”
  • The investigation into the murder of the nation’s only cabinet-level Christian, Shahbaz Bhatti, has become mired amid suspicions of a possible cover-up.  Lax investigations, a series of freed suspects, and lack of coordination across law enforcement organizations have stalled the case following the March 2, 2011 slaying of the federal minister for Minority Affairs, who was an outspoken critic of, and targeted by, those who support Pakistan’s “blasphemy” laws.
  • Christians are being threatened and abused for trying to save their community’s graveyard which they owned since 1947.  Despite failing to produce any proof, a retired Muslim official who claims he “recently discovered” that the land really belongs to him has already built a boundary wall, reducing the graveyard to less than a third of its original size, and turned the seized land over to agricultural use.  Police failed to respond, as usual.

Dhimmitude

[General Abuse, Debasement, and Suppression of non-Muslims as “Tolerated” Citizens]

Egypt:  A court verdict that was criticized by many human rights groups as “unbelievable” and “extremely harsh” towards Christians was decided according to religion: all twelve Christians were convicted to life imprisonment, while all eight Muslims—including some who torched nearly 60 Christian homes—were acquitted, all to thunderous cries of “Allahu Akbar!” in the courtroom.  Another Muslim judge in Upper Egypt dismissed all charges against a group of Muslims who terrorized a Christian man and his family for over a year, culminating with their cutting off his ear in a knife attack while trying to force him to convert after they “falsely accused him” of having an affair with a Muslim woman.   And a new report describes the plight of Coptic girls: “hundreds of Christian girls … have been abducted, forced to convert to Islam, and forced into marriage in Egypt. These incidents are often accompanied by acts of violence, including rape, beatings, and other forms of physical and mental abuse.”

Philadelphia and the Burqa Bandits

Saturday, June 30th, 2012

Some scoff at the idea that face-covering Islamic veils endanger public safety in any Western nation, let alone the United States, but Philadelphians do not have the luxury of blissful ignorance. As recent events highlight, their city has become the American epicenter of robberies and murders carried out by criminals disguised as fundamentalist Muslim women. Several factors help explain Philadelphia’s place at the forefront of this trend. Will other U.S. cities be next?

The latest wave of burqa banditry to target Philadelphia began at a branch of More Bank in the East Oak Lane neighborhood two days before Christmas. Following similar heists on January 6, March 14, March 20, and April 4, the Philadelphia Police Department and FBI issued a wanted flier for a pair of black males in “Muslim-like clothing covering their heads and bodies.” Surveillance images indicate that the outfits include face veils (niqabs) and “burqa-like robes,” to quote one news item, leaving just the eyes visible. The same Wells Fargo branch struck on April 4 was then hit again on April 13, after which Muslim groups offered $20,000 for information leading to the perpetrators. No arrests or further bank robberies have been reported.

The criminal applications of this attire also were on display during an April 18 homicide at a barbershop in Upper Darby, a township bordering West Philadelphia. Police believe that a love triangle inspired Sharif Wynn to enter with a gun and demand money from the barber, Michael Turner. Wynn insists that he merely meant to scare the man, but officers say that he shot Turner intentionally at point-blank range. The police superintendent has revealed that the attacker was “dressed in Muslim female garb, was covered from head to toe. The only thing that was showing was his eyes.” Authorities identified Wynn through interviews and his electronic trail.

Though assembling a complete history of niqab-aided crimes is hindered by the unknown consistency of media reporting, the seven incidents outlined above appear to be the most that the Philadelphia area has suffered in any four-month period to date. However, the city earned its reputation as a burqa banditry hot spot long before this recent spike.

The worst episode occurred on May 3, 2008, when three Muslim men—two dressed in female Islamic apparel and face veils—held up a Bank of America branch inside a supermarket in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia. Police Sergeant Stephen Liczbinski gave chase, only to be shot to death by robber Howard Cain, whom officers killed shortly thereafter. Cain’s accomplices were caught, convicted of murder, and sentenced to life.

The Philadelphia area endured many additional cases between then and now. On November 16, 2009, a man in a face veil attempted to rob a Bank of America location in the suburb of Drexel Hill, but he left empty-handed after an employee played dumb; DNA from a niqab discarded near the scene later led to an arrest. Other unsuccessful perpetrators have included an armed man in a “long black dress … and a hijab covering his head and face” at a Sovereign Bank branch in the city’s Mount Airy neighborhood on February 1, 2011, and a niqab-wearing man at a branch of the same bank in Woodlynne, New Jersey, just across the river from Philadelphia, on June 13, 2011.

Women have gotten into the act as well. Police arrested Lashawnda Jones in December 2010 following robberies of four TD Bank branches within a 40-mile radius of Philadelphia during the prior two months. Though Jones had sported a niqab in the earlier heists, she used only a headscarf (hijab) for the final one, in which she lured tellers to the vault, brandished firearms, and stole $103,000. Soon after showing her face, she was behind bars.

A blog post by Middle East Forum president Daniel Pipes collects more examples from the area. Similar cases throughout the West—including many in Europe and a few others in North America—are listed too, but crimes of this nature occur with surprising frequency in the City of Brotherly Love.

Pensioner who died after fall at care home ‘lay on the floor bleeding for up to 10 minutes because Muslim nurse was praying’

Saturday, March 24th, 2012

An elderly woman who suffered a fall was left lying on the floor at  a care home for up to ten minutes because a senior nurse was  praying, an inquest heard.

Abdul Bhutto, an agency nurse, told junior staff they would have to wait until he finished before he would attend to 87-year-old Dorothy  Griffiths, who died nine days later.

Mrs Griffiths, who suffered from  Alzheimer’s, was left on the floor while the Muslim nurse continued to pray on his mat.

Eventually he arrived and examined the pensioner before telling carers to put  her back to bed. She was later found unresponsive and was taken to hospital.

Mrs Griffiths had cut her head and gashed her hip when she fell from her bed during the night and was found on the floor when staff rushed to her room after hearing a loud bang.

A carer went to the care home’s office for help to lift her but Mr Bhutto, who was in charge, said they would have to wait until he had finished his prayers.

Carer Zoe Shaw told the inquest: ‘It took between five and ten  minutes because he was praying. A staff member told me we had to wait for him to finish.’

The inquest heard Mr Bhutto was the most senior nurse on duty.

He examined Mrs Griffiths on the floor but did not call an ambulance and instructed carers to put her back to bed.

But instead Mrs Shaw, worried that she might fall again, washed the pensioner, dressed her and sat with her in the office.

Claim: The incident happened at Valley Park care home in South Yorkshire, pictured, in October last yearClaim: The incident happened at Valley Park care home in South Yorkshire, pictured, in October last year

At about 5.45am she took Mrs Griffiths to the lounge and said she appeared to be well and was ‘talking fine’ and walking around.

But at breakfast time Mrs Griffiths was found to be unresponsive and an ambulance was called at about 7.30am.

Mrs Shaw, who broke down and wept during her evidence, said she would have called an ambulance immediately after the fall.

She said that as a carer she did not realise she could and since this incident she had discovered staff could override a nurse’s decision. Mrs Griffiths, a former pub landlady and the widow of former Barnsley footballer Steve Griffiths, had been a resident at the  privately-run Valley Park Nursing Home in Wombwell, near Barnsley, since 2009 and died in hospital on November 3.

Mr Bhutto failed to appear at  the inquest in Sheffield and a  summons had to be issued for him to attend later in the year.

The court heard he had been contacted and denied being senior nurse that night.

After the hearing was adjourned, Mrs Griffiths’s daughter Jean David, 61, said the family had been put through more grief due to the nurse not turning up.

Mrs David added: ‘You put your trust in these people.

‘What would happen if there was a fire, would they then stop praying?’

It is understood Mrs Griffiths died from a brain haemorrhage and pneumonia although this has yet to be confirmed.

A spokesman for the home, which is run by the Mimosa Healthcare Group, declined to comment.

CONTROVERSIAL MEDIA MATTERS DONOR DENIES ANTISEMITISM

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012

At the end of February, the German Interior Ministry published a study entitled “Young Muslims in Germany”. The study’s publication has become the occasion for a renewed campaign against immigrant communities in Germany. The tabloid Bild newspaper published a distorted report of some of the study results, labelling Muslims as “opposed to integration”, vilifying them as hostile to democracy and implying them to be potential terrorists.

Bild refers to a “shocking study”, citing statistics according to which 22 percent of Muslims with a German passport reject integration and emphasise their own cultural origins. For Muslims without a German passport, as many as 48 percent expressed strong “separatist tendencies”. Moreover, a quarter of non-German Muslims, according to the study, are “very religious with a strong dislike of the West, tend to accept violence and do not support integration.”

These figures, taken completely out of context, are then peppered with a quote from Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich (Christian Social Union—CSU), who told the press: “Germany respects the cultural identity and origins of its immigrants. But we do not accept the import of authoritarian, anti-democratic and fanatical religious views. Those who oppose freedom and democracy have no future here. It is the task of everyone to make this clear.”

The spokesman of the Christian Democratic parliamentary faction, Hans-Peter Uhl (CSU), then added in comments to the Neuen Osnabrücker, “This refusal to integrate must not become the breeding ground for religious fanaticism and terrorism.”

This deliberate political campaign seeks to limit the study’s findings to that which can be exploited for the dissemination of xenophobic sentiments. In fact, the 750-page report provides a much more nuanced picture. The fact that the researchers are critical of the government’s integration policy is being swept under the carpet.

The study was commissioned by Wolfgang Schäuble, the former interior minister (CDU), in early 2009. This was allegedly due to concerns of a radicalisation of Muslims in Germany. This in turn was linked to the presentation by politicians and the press of a series of murders of Turkish citizens in Germany allegedly connected to the activities of Turkish criminals or radical Islamists. In fact, it emerged that the killings had been carried out by a neo-fascist gang, the “Sauerland group”, which had been able to carry out its crimes for more than a decade—although the group and its activities were well known to the German intelligence forces.

For Schäuble, the purpose of the study was mainly to present arguments supporting the thesis that Muslims were potential terrorists, who by nature are “undemocratic”, radical fundamentalists. It is clear that its remit was only to look at the attitudes of Muslims, and not to consider social circumstances, as Klaus Böhnke, one of the authors of the study, told the online edition of the magazine Cicero.

The team of researchers from Jena, Bremen, Linz and Weimar finally commissioned to undertake the work for the Interior Ministry consisted of communication and social psychologists whose previous scientific studies dealt with terrorism, religious fanaticism and political extremism, but who had no expertise in research on migration and social inequality.

More surprising is that the team led by Prof. Wolfgang Frindte of the University of Jena chose a broad methodological approach and held open discussions with multi-generational households of Muslims, and in various Muslim communities. However, the standardised telephone survey, whose results have now caused the fuss in the media, was completely in line with the remit of the study.

This part of the study shows glaring deficiencies that were uncovered by the research project “Heymat” at Humboldt University in Berlin. At this point, it is important to consider in more detail the researchers’ use of the term “radicalisation” of young people. They define it as follows:

Those “(Muslim) persons or organisations can be considered radical who are looking for profound social and political changes in Germany, but who at least respect the current political and legal system of the Federal Republic [of Germany], and who do not undertake any illegal or violent actions or sanction them.”

Quite apart from the inconsistency between the desire for “profound changes” and the simultaneous “respect for the political system”, such a definition would probably apply to a large majority of the population. But how was this “radicalism” then captured in the telephone interviews? Respondents were presented with statements with which they could agree or reject. For example, they were presented with the statement: “As long as the Western world exploits other peoples or suppresses them there will be no peace in the world.” It is difficult to see how anyone could fail to agree with this proposition.

Respondents were branded as anti-Semitic if they expressed criticism of Israel and agreed with the statement: “Israel alone is to blame for the emergence and maintenance of the conflicts in the Middle East.” Not a single question, however, focused on existential issues such as education, income, living and working conditions, residency status or discrimination by state authorities.

Here, the researchers clearly have taken over the views held by the Interior Ministry. And it is these passages of the study that were given to Bildnewspaper and presented in a subsequent Ministry press release to the public.

What has been ignored, however, are the conclusions drawn by the researchers as a result of their open discussions with migrants and which diametrically contradict the figures cited in the report. For example, in the middle of the data collection in late summer 2010, the debate about the book by the right-winger Thilo Sarrazin erupted, which gave the researchers the dubious good fortune of seizing the consequences for Muslim migrants. They came to the very clear conclusion that the discussion has been by no means beneficial for integration, as claimed by the German integration commissioner, Maria Böhmer (CDU), but had mainly repelled Muslims, who felt unwanted and expressed fear and disappointment.

In the final policy recommendations, the scientists explicitly speak in favour of creating structural conditions that grant migrants equal rights. Integration is not the obligation of migrants, but a “challenge to mainstream society”. Permanent discrimination, the equating of Islam with terrorism, exclusion and denial of belonging would lead Muslim youth to seek other forms of identity, turning towards religious and authoritarian views.

On the basis of these statements, the authors of the report have been largely ignored since the publication of the study. According to Klaus Böhnke, the study was already complete and delivered to the ministry in the summer of 2011. In November 2011, the Ministry announced a joint press conference, which was then cancelled suddenly on February 27, 2012.

Two days later, Bild published its article on the “shocking study”, including an official statement by Interior Minister Friedrich. At this time, the study was publicly available. Clearly, the exact results of the study were leaked to the tabloid, to be exploited for a sensationalist campaign against Muslims.

Politicians from the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Greens and the Free Democratic Party (FDP), a member of the coalition government, expressed criticism regarding the publication of the study. They questioned its methodology and reasoning, and accused Friedrich of populism.

But the claim of the SPD’s integration commissioner, Aydan Özuguz, to deal “seriously with the causes of segregation and violence”, or the complaint of Volker Beck (Green Party) that Muslims are only judged “in relation to security matters”, are not serious.

It was the SPD that in 1993 agreed on the so-called asylum compromise with the Christian Democrats, by which refugees were indiscriminately accused of having “immigrated to Germany for the welfare system”. And it was the SPD-Green government that systematically curtailed the democratic rights of migrants after September 11, 2001, and viewed Muslims as potential terrorists. In Berlin, until recently, the reigning SPD-Left Party city government boasted that it systematically deported “criminal aliens”.

These parties support a government policy that aims to mobilise the dregs of society by means of chauvinism and xenophobia. It is no coincidence that Friedrich now garners applause from the far right. The chair of the ultra-right Republikaner party, Rolf Schlierer, congratulated the minister with the words: “It is high time after weeks of artificial hysteria ‘against the right’, that the real threat to internal cohesion and peaceful coexistence in our state is at last placed on the political agenda”.

Barely one week has passed since leaders of the German political establishment publicly expressed their sympathy for the victims of the neo-Nazi terrorist cell in Zwickau. The actions of these neo-Nazis had taken place for years under the eyes of, and quite possibly with the active support of, the secret service and law enforcement agencies, whose employer is the federal interior minister. The anti-democratic and authoritarian methods of the police and intelligence agencies are, however, to be excluded from public debate. Instead, a dubious scientific study has once again triggered a debate on integration, which is nothing more than a smear campaign against migrants living and working in Germany.

CAIR Slams NY Post for Political Cartoon That ‘Evokes Anti-Semitic Themes’

Monday, February 27th, 2012

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has called on the New York Post to apologize for a political cartoon published in the paper Friday which CAIR says “evokes anti-Semitic themes” through its depiction of hook-nosed terrorists objecting to the NYPD’s surveillance of Muslims without warrant throughout the city.

Muslim Group objects to NY Post cartoon (faceook)

A post on the group’s Facebook page indicates that the Muslim civil rights groups is askingAmerican Muslims and “other people of conscience to contact the newspaper and to politely ask that they apologize for the offensive cartoon.”

“This offensive and inaccurate political cartoon evokes anti-Semitic themes that would be recognized by any historian of pre-war Nazi Germany,” Zead Ramadan, board president of CAIR’s New York chapter, said in a statement. “The cartoon is not only offensive in its portrayal of a religious minority; it is also inaccurate in its depiction of those targeted by the NYPD spy campaign in that there is no evidence that those monitored were suspected of wrongdoing of any kind.”

CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization.

The organization has made news in the past for applauding West Point for pulling the speaking invite for a General critical of Islam, defending Muslims on the government no-fly list, and members calling for Americans to stop associating 9/11 with the Muslim religion.

The organization writes that its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.

We Dare Call It Treason

Saturday, February 18th, 2012

Close on the heels of threatening to eviscerate America’s defense budget and cripple our ability to defend ourselves on more than one front, Barrack Hussein Obama-Soetoro is now pushing for cutting our nuclear weapons force by up to 80 percent, to a level less than that of his idols, the Communist Chinese. We have come to expect the leftist Democrat Party to want defense cuts, but the proposals being thrust upon us by the squatter in the White House will leave us wide open to devastating attack from nearly every quarter. About the only nations with smaller military capabilities will be Chad and the Central African Republic.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines “treason” as:

1: the betrayal of a trust; treachery

2: the offense of attempting by overt acts to overthrow the government of the state to which the offender owes allegiance

According to our Constitution, Article III, Section 3:

Treason against the United States, shall consist of levying War against them, or adhering to their Enemies, giving them aid and comfort (italics mine).

To act in a manner that causes one’s country to become unable to defend itself from external attack, at a time when another country is making daily threats against us, and is about to become armed with nuclear weapons and already has the means to deliver them, could, by these definitions, easily be seen as treason. Indeed, a concerted attack by Iran, in partnership with their Russian pals and Venezuela, and possibly China, ever the opportunists, too, would likely cause the collapse of our economy, and thus our government, and the subsequent excuse to institute martial law. To knowingly make moves that bring about this outcome could not be seen as anything but treason.

Obama-Soetoro has made it clear from the outset that he hates America and its constitution, capitalism, white people, and Christians. He made a point of publicly insulting our long-time allies like Britain and Israel, and of bowing to the Muslim Saudi king and the Head Red of China. What has he done — ever — to contradict the notion that he believes America needs to be punished for her greatness, which he sees as having been achieved by criminal exploitation of “people of color”?

Raised by Muslims and communists, on reaching young adulthood Obama-Soetoro, by his own self-aggrandizing admission, made conscious choices to closely associate himself with radical Marxists and black supremacists. These were, and are, people who ardently believe in the violent overthrow of our government and the destruction of America as a free, sovereign, capitalist nation. Are we now to believe that disarming America is not part of furthering this agenda?

The Democrats seem to have the delusionary idea that having fewer nukes than China will persuade them to not attack us with theirs. This is not a notion that rational people share. It seems unlikely, too, that this is the “change” that many who voted for B. Hussein were hoping for. From what I have read, nukes don’t discern between the young and the old, the male and the female, the black and the white, the rich and the poor, the oppressor and the oppressed, the progressive and the conservative, the Muslim and the Infidel. Nukes kill ’em all, and leave it to God to sort ’em out. Not having enough nukes to act as a deterrent — and the Cold War proved their effectiveness as a deterrent — nor the apparent will to use them, is suicidal.

Even a relatively small country like Iran, armed only with small nukes but run by religious zealots becomes a threat to every American, and every non-Muslim, world-wide. They have made clear that once they possess nukes, they intend to use them. A suitcase-size one, walked over the unclosed border from Mexico, could destroy a whole city and murder its entire population in a heartbeat, bringing the collapse noted above, and the imposition of martial law. With our military tied up in trying to defend/run our cities, our overseas interests, economic and political, disappear. Overnight, we become an isolated, poverty-stricken Third World has-been.

Obama-Soetoro must not be allowed to get away with bringing down America. It’s bad enough that he appears to have almost no opposition to his policies that have already damaged us badly, looting the Treasury, and filling the pockets of his cronies/donors in the process. He must not be permitted to administer the coup de grace.

The Tea Parties need to get active again, organizing some massive marches in Washington and elsewhere, like outside military bases, supporting, not denigrating our armed forces. We need to overwhelm the enemy with our numbers. And we need to send a loud, clear, unmistakable message to the political class that “we’re mad as hell, and we’re not going to take it anymore!”

NY Police Chief Admits Conducting Interview for Controversial Film

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly (file photo)

At least two American Muslim organizations are calling for the resignation of New York City‘s police commissioner and his spokesman for their involvement with a film criticized as anti-Muslim propaganda.

The film, The Third Jihad, made by a private group, purports to show that violence and radicalism are the “true agenda” of many Muslims in the United States.

The movie contains an interview with New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly that police department spokesman Paul Browne first said was taken from another source. But after the film’s producers said that was untrue, Browne admitted arranging the interview.  He said that Kelly on Wednesday called the film “objectionable” and regretted participating in it.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, is calling for Kelly and Browne to resign, saying that they covered up their roles in the film.

Zead Ramadan, the organization’s New York head, said Kelly made a terrible mistake.

“He, unfortunately, has agreed to knowingly working on a film that’s turned out to be Nazi-esque in its propaganda against Muslim people,” said Ramadan.

News reports on Tuesday said the film was shown to almost 1,500 New York police officers during counter-terrorism training in 2010.  Police spokesman Paul Browne said that a police sergeant acted on her own when she screened it during shifts in a room where officers filled out paperwork.

“There was no discussion; there was no training about it,” said Browne. “And it was unauthorized.”

In a rare criticism of his police department, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said “someone” in the police department used “terrible judgment” in showing the film.

The Islamic Circle of North America also denounced the police commissioner’s participation in the film, and plans to join CAIR and other Muslim and human rights groups on Thursday to demand Kelly’s resignation.
